Let me tell you: I found a new appreciation for photography and art

Let me tell you something. Over the past few year or so, I have developed a new appreciation for photography. It is something that I never would have expected to be into, but with this new age of social media, photographers have an easy way to share their art with people all around the world. Now like most people in the world, I love beautiful landscape photography and art. I have photos of Hawaii scattered throughout my home, which were gifts from my mother. While it is always nice to admire the beauty of it all, I love being able to look at the photo and see my home. It gives me a feeling of warmth and comfort to remind myself of where I come from. I know that no matter where I am in the world, my island soul with be with me always. I also have a photo I bought in high school that I finally get to have up which is newborn turtles on their way to the sea. I love animals but again, this photo reminds me of home. It reminds me of the preciousness of life and the beauty of it. I absolutely love this photo. In my bed room, I have 2 Disney paintings and one Disney sketch. The paintings were done by Darren Wilson for Disney and they are so stunning. I have the circle of life moment in the Lion King and the detail is unreal. He makes it look like it was right out of the movie, but more enhanced. It looks like a still captured at that exact moment. The other one is a Little Mermaid piece. Ariel is sitting on a rock looking up at the moon, which I don’t believe was in the original movie. I can’t describe how much I love this piece. It is so stunning in the detail and the way the moon is reflecting on the water. What I love about Darren’s art is that he paints the characters and scenes so they look like they were made by the artist who worked on the film. They stay true to the originals and I appreciate that so much. Now the last photo I have is a sketch that I had commissioned at Disney World of Lilo. It only has 2 colors, red and green. Everything was sketched by hand in pencil right in front of me. I was blown away. I think it is special because there is no one in the world who has the sketch that I have. The details of the sketch marks and colors will never be recreated exactly in any other sketch. As a Hawaiian, Lilo has been a huge love of mine as she represented the Hawaiian culture and shared it with the world. It will always be one of my favorites.

Another thing I love about photography is its ability to make people think. It a form of art and it will make you think just like other works of art do. It can be so incredibly powerful. When the photographer is taking the photo, they know what they want the viewer to feel. They have a motivation for the photo and the art that they are creating. They want you to understand a message once you walk away from the photo. So all of this has been inspired by a photographer I follow on Instagram, Brendan North. I can’t pinpoint exactly when or how I found him, but I followed him and in the past few months, I fell in love with the photos he shares and the messages he portrays. He mostly does his work with people out in LA. I love that he can use people as art and create a piece where you think. My favorite photos of his are his painted series. The paintings are in black and white but the paint is always white. So it pops out more than everything else in the photo. He usually writes words on people to explain a message and accompanies the photo with a poem he wrote. There are so many pieces in the series that I love but I’ll describe some of the elements I love. He talks a lot about this new era of social media fame and how it changes people. How it can consume your life and you lose your sense of being. I love that because I have grown into the social media world as most didn’t exist when I was growing up. So, I see how social media can influence young children in this world and the damage it can have on self love, self confidence and finding who you truly are. He also does pieces on love and being true to yourself. Finding your place and purpose in the world. Understanding the world around us. Every photo I see from him in the series makes me stop whatever I am doing to think. I think about how he has crafted this piece to give us a message from him. He wants people to understand what is on his mind. I love that I can see what he sees in the photo but also find my own meaning. Something is special to you once you find meaning in it. I love that I am discovering this art form and I have Brendan North to thank for it.

If you get a chance, make sure to check out the artists that I mentioned because they are so incredible in their art. I have to give them credit where credit is due.
